Trail Running in Zell am See-Kaprun: The Best Routes

Categories: -

Zell am See-Kaprun is a dream for anyone who loves to run. Between the crystal-clear Lake Zell, the slopes of the Schmittenhöhe and the high-alpine Kaprun valley, you will find routes for every level — from the flat lakeside loop to demanding trails above 2,000 metres. In this guide we present the finest running and trail-running routes and share tips on the season, altitude and where to refuel.

The loop around Lake Zell

The classic for your daily run is the path around Lake Zell. Over roughly eleven kilometres, the largely flat lakeshore route leads from the town centre along the promenade to Thumersbach and back — almost always with a view of the water and the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks. The loop is flat, well signposted and perfect for an easy steady run or a relaxed jog at sunrise.

Trail running on the Schmittenhöhe

If you prefer it more mountainous, the Schmittenhöhe offers a dense network of hiking and trail paths. From Zell am See the way climbs steeply in places, and up top you are rewarded with panoramic ridge trails and the famous view of more than 30 three-thousanders. You can take the cable car up and start running at altitude — ideal if you want to collect elevation while skipping the steep climb.

Running in the Kaprun valley

For something quieter and flatter, head into the Kaprun valley. Shaded paths follow the Kapruner Ache towards the head of the valley before the terrain steepens towards the high mountain reservoirs. The valley is ideal for long, even sessions and stays pleasantly cool on hot summer days. For more of a challenge, combine the valley route with a climb towards the reservoirs for genuine mountain training.

Tips for your run

  • Best season: The main running season runs from May to October. The lakeside loop is often doable in spring and late autumn too, whenever conditions are snow-free.
  • Mind the altitude: Zell am See sits at around 750 metres and the trails climb considerably higher. Allow a little more time for mountain runs and start easy.
  • Start & refuel: The lakeside promenade in the centre is an ideal starting point with parking, drinking fountains and places to refuel.
  • Quieter alternative: The Thumersbach side is usually less busy — perfect for an undisturbed morning run.
