Day 1: Zell am See & the Zeller See

Ease into the week. In the morning, stroll along the Seepromenade and through the Zell am See Altstadt with its lanes and cafes. In the afternoon, the MS Schmittenhoehe boat carries you across the Zeller See – from the water the mountain panorama shows its best side. Round off the evening at the Strandbad, with a dip in the cool water or a sundowner on the shore.

Winter alternative: A walk along the snowy lakeside and a turn on the ice – the frozen lake and the ice-skating rinks make for a quiet, wintry first day.

Day 2: Kitzsteinhorn – TOP OF SALZBURG

Today you go high. The 3K K-onnection via the Maiskogel floats you up to the glacier of the Kitzsteinhorn, reaching TOP OF SALZBURG at around 3,000 metres. At the top, the Nationalpark Gallery and the Cinema 3000 await, with a viewing platform and a tunnel view into the glacier world. Allow the whole morning into the afternoon – the altitude and the panoramas deserve time.

Winter alternative: A ski day on the glacier and across the region. Everything you need is in our guide to skiing in Kaprun & on the Kitzsteinhorn.

Day 3: Schmittenhoehe & ridge trails

The third day belongs to Zell am See’s local mountain. Ride the lift up the Schmittenhoehe, where a 360-degree panorama opens over the Zeller See and the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Hohe Tauern. In the morning, walk the scenic ridge trails; in the afternoon there is time to stop at an alpine hut. The wide view of glaciers and lake is the heart of the day.

Winter alternative: Skiing the Schmitten – broad pistes with lake views and a superbly groomed ski area right above town.

Day 4: Kaprun nature – gorge & reservoirs

Today nature around Kaprun takes centre stage. In the morning the path leads through the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm, a striking gorge with roaring water and timber walkways. In the afternoon you climb to the Hochgebirgsstauseen – turquoise mountain lakes behind mighty dam walls, high above the valley. Pack sturdy shoes and a jacket.

Winter alternative: Tobogganing on the Maiskogel and afterwards unwinding at the TAUERN SPA Kaprun – the perfect winter day of movement and warmth.

Day 5: Active day – e-bike, hiking & national park

Day 5 is your active day. Choose between an e-bike loop through the valley or a hiking circuit with mountain views. If you want to go deeper, book a guided day in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern – with ranger insight into glaciers, wildlife and the high-alpine world. It is the way to experience the region actively and learn its natural history.

Winter alternative: Cross-country skiing on the groomed trails and a winter-hiking loop along prepared paths through the snowy landscape.

Day 6: Relax & culture – spa & Burg Kaprun

After the active days comes the gentle one. Spend the morning at the TAUERN SPA Kaprun with saunas, pools and mountain views. In the afternoon visit Burg Kaprun, the castle high above the village, and wander through Kaprun itself. Enjoy the evening back at the lake – with one last calm look across the water.

Winter alternative: Spa in the morning and, in the afternoon, a stroll through the Advent and Christmas market – with punch, lights and a wintry mood.

Day 7: The big day trip

Finish with the big excursion. Three classics to choose from: the Krimmler Wasserfaelle in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse (in season), or a day in the city of Salzburg. Add a buffer to return to a favourite place. That is how the full, unhurried week ends – exactly where you enjoyed it most.
