Three days in Zell am See-Kaprun are plenty to take in the region’s signature trio: the turquoise Zeller See, the 3,000-metre Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the panoramic Schmittenhöhe. This itinerary walks you through the highlights day by day – with a relaxed summer plan and a short winter alternative for each one. That way your 3 days in Zell am See-Kaprun make the very most of your time.
At a glance
- Best season: summer (June–September) for lake and mountains, winter (December–March) for skiing and glacier.
- Base: Zell am See or Kaprun – the two towns are just minutes apart.
- Getting around: free regional buses with the guest card, short distances, a car is rarely needed.
- Budget: moderate – cable cars and the boat trip are the biggest costs, much around the lake is free.
Day 1 – Zell am See & the lake
Morning: Ease into your trip in the Zell am See Altstadt (old town). Stroll along the Seepromenade, wander the historic lanes and enjoy your first coffee with a lake view. From here the eye sweeps across the Zeller See to the peaks of the Hohe Tauern.
Afternoon: Board the MS Schmittenhöhe at the harbour and glide across the Zeller See on a scenic cruise. If you’d rather stay active, rent a SUP board or take a dip in the clear water – the Strandbad lido is the perfect spot.
Evening: Round off the day on the Seepromenade, watching the sun set behind the mountains.
Winter alternative: In winter the lakeside path becomes an atmospheric winter walk. Glide a few laps ice skating by the lake, then warm up in one of the cosy cafés in the Altstadt.
Day 2 – Kaprun & the Kitzsteinhorn glacier
Morning: Today you head for the heights. The 3K K-onnection carries you in one seamless ride from the Maiskogel up to the Kitzsteinhorn. The destination is TOP OF SALZBURG at 3,000 m – the region’s year-round glacier highlight.
Afternoon: Up top you’ll find the Nationalpark Gallery, a tunnel carved into the rock with insights into the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, plus the Cinema 3000. The viewing platform serves up a 360-degree panorama over glaciers and three-thousanders.
Evening: Back in the valley, unwind at the TAUERN SPA Kaprun – saunas and pools with a mountain backdrop.
Winter alternative: In winter the Kitzsteinhorn turns into a snow-sure ski day with slopes that stay open well into spring. Find all the details in our skiing guide for Kaprun & Kitzsteinhorn.
Day 3 – Schmittenhöhe
Morning: The cable car lifts you up to the Schmittenhöhe, Zell am See’s local mountain. The panorama over lake and valley opens up while you’re still on the way up.
Afternoon: Hike the scenic ridge trails along the crest. The view reaches across the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern to the Großglockner and the Kitzsteinhorn – one of the finest grandstands in the Alps.
Evening: If you still have time, stop on the way back at the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge or the medieval Burg Kaprun castle.
Winter alternative: In winter the Schmittenhöhe is a varied ski area with broad carving slopes and panoramic descents leading straight down to Zell am See.
