Five days in Zell am See-Kaprun is the ideal length to truly experience this region between the turquoise waters of Lake Zell and the eternal ice of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. This day-by-day itinerary takes you to the most beautiful spots: from the lakeshore to the glacier world, across the panorama of the Schmittenhöhe and into the wild nature around Kaprun. Each day includes a short winter alternative, because the region is a delight year-round. Here is how to plan your 5 days in Zell am See-Kaprun in a relaxed, stress-free way.

At a glance

  • Day 1: Zell am See & Lake Zell – lakeside promenade, old town, boat trip on the MS Schmittenhöhe
  • Day 2: Kitzsteinhorn – the 3K K-onnection via the Maiskogel to the TOP OF SALZBURG
  • Day 3: Schmittenhöhe – panorama summit & ridge trails
  • Day 4: Kaprun – Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge & high-mountain reservoirs
  • Day 5: Active day – an e-bike or hiking loop, or a guided day in the Hohe Tauern National Park

Day 1: Zell am See & Lake Zell

Start gently, right by the water. In the morning, stroll along the lakeside promenade and through the car-free old town of Zell am See, with its lanes, cafes and late-Gothic parish church. The view across the lake to the Kitzsteinhorn sets the mood for the days ahead.

In the afternoon, take a boat trip on the MS Schmittenhöhe across Lake Zell – from the water you see the mountain panorama at its finest. If you prefer to swim, spend a few hours at the Strandbad lakeside bathing area. Round off the evening with a walk along the shore and dinner with a lake view.

Winter alternative: A wintry walk along the snow-covered shore and ice skating on the frozen Lake Zell create a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.

Day 2: Kitzsteinhorn – TOP OF SALZBURG

Today you head for the heights. In the morning, ride the 3K K-onnection via the Maiskogel all the way up towards the glacier. This spectacular tri-cable gondola glides over the valley and links Kaprun directly with the Kitzsteinhorn.

In the afternoon, the final section brings you to the TOP OF SALZBURG at around 3,000 metres. From the viewing platform your gaze sweeps far across the Hohe Tauern to the Großglockner. Explore the Nationalpark Gallery, a tunnel hewn into the rock, and treat yourself to a panoramic film in the Cinema 3000. Spend a quiet evening back in the valley – the high-altitude air makes you pleasantly tired.

Winter alternative: The Kitzsteinhorn has snow from autumn into late spring – the perfect day for skiing. Find tips in our skiing guide for Kaprun & Kitzsteinhorn.

Day 3: Schmittenhöhe – pure panorama

The third day belongs to Zell am See’s local mountain. In the morning, the cable car carries you comfortably to the summit of the Schmittenhöhe (around 2,000 m). At the top, one of the finest 360-degree panoramas in the Alps awaits, with views of around 30 three-thousand-metre peaks.

In the afternoon, hike the scenic ridge and high-altitude trails. Cosy alpine huts invite you to stop for a bite, and the family-friendly adventure trail is fun for children too. Spend the evening back in Zell am See, perhaps with a sundowner and a mountain view.

Winter alternative: In winter the Schmitten is one of the region’s loveliest ski areas – perfectly groomed slopes for every level, right above town.

Day 4: Kaprun – gorge & reservoirs

Today you discover the wild nature around Kaprun. In the morning, walk through the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm, an impressive gorge where glacial water thunders past along walkways and bridges.

In the afternoon, head up to the Kaprun high-mountain reservoirs. Buses and an inclined lift take you to the turquoise reservoir lakes Wasserfallboden and Mooserboden at over 2,000 metres – an engineering marvel amid the mountains. Wind down the evening at leisure in the village.

Winter alternative: A thrilling toboggan run on the Maiskogel, followed by relaxation at the TAUERN SPA Kaprun with its sauna world and thermal pools.

Day 5: Active day & nature

Finish on an active note. In the morning, take an e-bike or hiking loop around Lake Zell or through the Pinzgau valley – many well-signposted trails lead through meadows, forests and small villages. Alternatively, book a guided day in the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest national park in the Alps.

In the afternoon, there is time for one last highlight of your choice – such as the medieval Burg Kaprun castle or another dip in the lake. Enjoy the evening with a fine farewell dinner.

Winter alternative: Glide along the lakeside trails on cross-country skis, or set off on a guided winter hike through the snowy landscape.
