Key facts at a glance

For many people March is the best compromise of the winter: far more sun and daylight than deep winter, still dependable snow at altitude, and noticeably falling prices once the half-term holidays are over. Timing within the day matters. Mornings are hard and fast, by afternoon the surface softens. Start early and spend the afternoon on a sun terrace and you get the most pleasant ski day of the year.

When people who know Zell am See-Kaprun well are asked to recommend a single winter month, the answer is strikingly often March. The reason is simple: you get almost the snow reliability of deep winter, but with far more light, more agreeable temperatures and, once the half-term holidays are over, noticeably lower prices. March is the month when skiing becomes relaxed again.

Weather: spring below, winter above

In the valley, daytime highs already average around 8 degrees, with nights just below freezing. At 750 metres spring is visibly under way. At the same time the Schmittenhöhe and still more the Kitzsteinhorn remain in deep winter. That contrast, green meadows in the valley and deeply snow-covered pistes above, is one of the defining images of March in this region.

In practice: pack for two seasons. Ski kit for up top, lighter clothing and sunglasses for below. UV exposure on the glacier is already high in March, so sun protection is not a detail.

The spring-snow rule: why the clock decides

In spring the snow runs through a daily cycle. The surface freezes overnight and softens under the sun during the day. For your ski day that means a clear sequence: early morning the piste is hard and very fast, from mid-morning to midday it reaches the ideal grippy spring state, and through the afternoon it becomes increasingly heavy and wet.

Knowing this changes the plan: early lift start, main programme in the morning, and from the afternoon a deliberate switch to a sun terrace, the spa or something in the valley. On the high, north-facing pistes of the Kitzsteinhorn the snow stays cold longer than on the south-facing slopes of the Schmittenhöhe. For help deciding, see Kitzsteinhorn or Schmittenhöhe.

Prices and crowds

Once the half-term holidays end, the crowds thin markedly. From around mid-March accommodation is easier to find and cheaper while the ski areas still run at full capacity. For couples, solo travellers and anyone without school-holiday constraints this is the most attractive window of the season. Further approaches to saving in visiting on a budget.

Easter remains the exception where it falls in March; demand then picks up sharply again. Lift operating periods end at different times depending on the mountain and the snow, with the Kitzsteinhorn running longest as a glacier ski area. Exact dates vary each year, so please check them directly with the operator.

What else opens up in March

  • Ski touring and freeriding: a more settled snowpack and long days make March the classic touring month, see freeride routes on the Kitzsteinhorn.
  • Winter walking in the sun: the high-level promenades are far more pleasant in March than in deep winter, see winter without skiing.
  • Walks along the lakeshore: the promenade becomes a daily fixture again from March, background in Lake Zell.
  • Spa: the TAUERN SPA Kaprun is the ideal afternoon plan in March after an early ski day.
  • Gipfelwelt 3000: the best long-distance visibility of the year in clear spring air, see Gipfelwelt 3000.

Who March suits

March is the best choice for anyone who wants to combine skiing with comfort: long days, plenty of sun, good conditions at altitude and fair prices. It is ideal for couples, experienced skiers, ski tourers and families with flexible dates. It is less suitable if you expect a deep-winter backdrop in the village itself or are hoping for powder in the valley. For the wider winter picture, see the regional winter guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there still enough snow in March?

At altitude, yes. On the Kitzsteinhorn up to 3,029 metres and on the Schmittenhöhe the snowpack is still deep in March. Down in the valley at 750 metres it is often already spring. Green meadows below and winter above is the normal state of affairs.

What does spring snow mean for planning my day?

In spring the snow surface freezes overnight and softens during the day. Early morning the piste is hard, around midday it reaches an ideal grippy state, and by afternoon it becomes heavy and wet. For the best conditions, ski early and finish the day promptly.

Is March cheaper than February?

Considerably. Once the half-term holidays are through, accommodation prices fall noticeably while conditions at altitude are still very good. For travellers without school-holiday constraints this is the most attractive window of the winter.

Can you already sit by the lake in March?

On sunny days yes, but swimming is a long way off. Lake Zell only warms to comfortable temperatures in early summer. March is about sun terraces and walks, not water sports.
