Key facts at a glance

Until the 3K K-onnection reopens in December 2026, the only way onto the Kitzsteinhorn glacier is the Gletscherjet 1 from the valley station, served by the free ski bus Line K every 30 minutes and by line 660 from Zell am See. Ranked by that route: Das Alpenhaus Kaprun is the only one selling ski weeks explicitly dated to the autumn with a multi-day Kitzsteinhorn pass included (17 October to 27 November 2026); Hotel Sonnblick has a ski bus stop directly opposite and the Maiskogel 300 metres away for December; Ski Dome Apartments have a stop outside plus rental and ski school in the building; TAUERN SPA has the bus at its door but sits on the Zell am See side of Kaprun; Hotel Kaprunerhof is about ten minutes from the Gletscherjet but 500 metres from the nearest stop; AlpenParks Orgler, 300 metres from the Maiskogelbahn, comes into its own only from December.

From mid-October until early December the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun is the only skiing in Zell am See-Kaprun. In those weeks one thing decides whether a hotel is any use: how you get from your room to the Gletscherjet valley station, without a car and before the last ride up. The Maiskogel shortcut does not help yet — the operator lists the 3K K-onnection as “back in December 2026”. This list ranks six Kaprun properties by exactly that, using the operator’s timetables and each house’s own statements, and says what each one lacks.

At a glance: which base suits which glacier trip?

  • A week of autumn skiing with the pass already sorted: Das Alpenhaus Kaprun — the only one of the six with ski weeks explicitly dated to the autumn, a multi-day Kitzsteinhorn pass included.
  • Bus stop across the road, and the Maiskogel on foot once December comes: Hotel & Apartment Sonnblick.
  • A group of up to twelve with rental and ski school downstairs: Ski Dome Apartments.
  • Two nights of glacier and thermal spa: TAUERN SPA, with the bus stopping at its door.
  • A quieter house for couples, ten minutes from the glacier lift: Hotel Kaprunerhof.
  • December onwards, when the lift link to the glacier runs again: AlpenParks Orgler, 300 metres from the Maiskogelbahn.

How you actually reach the glacier in autumn

The Kitzsteinhorn’s planned ski start for this season was 10 October 2026. Until the 3K K-onnection reopens in December, the only way onto the glacier is the Gletscherjet 1 from the Kitzsteinhorn valley station, the last stop of the ski bus beyond Kaprun centre. On 20 October the operator listed it from 08:15, with the last ride up at 15:30, and noted that skiing ends at the Alpincenter — you ride back down rather than ski to the valley.

Two bus lines do the work. Line K runs Burg Kaprun – Maiskogelbahn valley station – Kaprun centre – Kitzsteinhorn valley station every 30 minutes from 10 October 2026 to 2 May 2027, and inside Kaprun the ski buses are free for everyone, ski pass or not. Line 660 comes up from Zell am See to the Kitzsteinhorn, every 30 minutes in autumn and every 15 minutes from 19 December outside the midday hours; between Zell am See and Kaprun it is free with a ski pass or the Guest Mobility Ticket. So the real question for any hotel is simply: how far is the nearest stop?

1. Das Alpenhaus Kaprun — the autumn ski week, already packaged

The Alpenhaus sits in the centre of Kaprun and is the one property here that sells the autumn glacier weeks as a dated ski week, pass included. “Schnee okay Kitzsteinhorn” is seven nights between 17 October and 27 November 2026 with a six-day Kitzsteinhorn ski pass included (the last pass is issued on 21 November); the “Midweek Special Kitzsteinhorn” is four nights between 18 October and 26 November with a four-day pass, arriving Sunday or Monday. Both come with breakfast, an afternoon snack and a buffet dinner with a served main course. On 20 October the hotel listed them from €1,141 and €619 per person in a double room, priced dynamically by date.

There is a ski room with racks and boot dryers, ski passes are sold at reception, and the hotel says the free ski bus stops near the house. The spa covers 1,000 m² over two floors with an indoor pool; the sauna area is for over-16s only.

What it lacks: the hotel does not give a distance to the stop, so ask which one before you rely on it with ski boots on. Parking is extra, €12 per space and night, and so are the local taxes.

2. Hotel & Apartment Sonnblick — the stop is across the road

The Sonnblick’s own FAQ is precise: a ski bus stop sits directly opposite the hotel, the Kitzsteinhorn valley station is a few minutes away by bus or car, and the Maiskogel valley station is about 300 metres on foot. That last figure is what makes it the better all-season choice — once the 3K K-onnection runs again in December, you can reach the glacier from the hotel by lift alone.

Ski gear goes into a locked room with heated boot dryers, ski passes are sold at reception, and the heated outdoor pool and the Zirben spa are included. The house has 45 rooms and suites, with breakfast or half board in winter, and its own autumn page pitches exactly this combination of a golden valley and first ski days on the glacier.

What it lacks: its ski packages, seven nights with a six-day pass or four nights with a three-day pass, do not say which dates they cover — ask whether they apply in the autumn weeks, when only the Kitzsteinhorn autumn pass is sold. The covered garage is on request and costs €10 a night.

3. Ski Dome Apartments — big units, rental and ski school in the building

The Ski Dome is refreshingly honest about what it is not: asked whether it is ski-in/ski-out, its own site answers no. What it offers instead is a ski bus stop directly outside the building and a rental shop and ski school inside it, so skis, boots and lessons are sorted before you step onto the bus. The apartments run from 62 m² for four to 186 m² over the top floor for twelve, with six bedrooms and six bathrooms, and parking is at the house.

What it lacks: these are apartments, not a hotel, so plan your own meals. Rental and lessons are booked separately. And it is not one of the properties we have a booking link for, so there is no button here — book through the apartments’ own site.

4. TAUERN SPA Zell am See-Kaprun — two glacier days and a thermal spa

The TAUERN SPA is the right pick if the glacier is half the reason for the trip and the spa is the other half. Its “GletscherFit & ThermenWellness” package is two nights with half board, a one-day glacier ski pass and a 25-minute back massage, bookable from 10 October 2026 to 11 April 2027. The spa itself covers more than 20,000 m². Line 660 stops directly in front of the thermal spa entrance, and outdoor parking is free.

What it lacks: location. The resort sits on the Zell am See side of Kaprun, about 2 kilometres from Kaprun railway station by its own account, so each glacier morning starts with a longer ride up the valley than from the centre. One ski day in a two-night package is a taster, not a ski week — which is why the Alpenhaus, with six or four ski days in its autumn packages, ranks above it.

5. Hotel Kaprunerhof — ten minutes to the Gletscherjet

The Kaprunerhof is a family-run house in the centre of Kaprun that says plainly it is not specialised in families, which is why couples like it. It puts the Gletscherjet 1 valley station at about ten minutes by ski bus or car, parking at the house is free, and there is an indoor pool and a spa for the afternoon. In autumn it runs a stay-five-pay-four offer from 1 November to 16 December 2026.

What it lacks: the nearest bus stop is 500 metres away, by the hotel’s own FAQ. Its free ski shuttle runs only from mid-December to early April, and it goes to the Maiskogel valley station, not to the glacier — so in the autumn weeks you walk to the stop or drive.

6. AlpenParks Hotel & Apartment Orgler — the December pick

By its own FAQ the Orgler is 300 metres on foot from the MK Maiskogelbahn. From December, when the 3K K-onnection runs again, that is the most direct lift route from Kaprun to the glacier, with no bus at all. There are hotel rooms and apartments with kitchens for two to eight, and the TAUERN SPA is a 15-minute walk away.

What it lacks: in October and November that 300 metres is worth little, because the Maiskogel does not connect to the glacier then — you take Line K like everyone else. There is no pool, reception is staffed from 08:00 to 20:00, and the underground car park costs €8 a day.

Which ski pass you need, and when it changes

The autumn is priced separately. From 17 October to 26 November 2026 the operator sells Kitzsteinhorn-only autumn passes. From 27 November the Ski ALPIN CARD takes over, which covers the Kitzsteinhorn, the Maiskogel, the Schmittenhöhe and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn on one ticket, in three price periods: winter start to 18 December, main season from 19 December to 12 March 2027 and bonus season to 4 April 2027.

If you book a package with a pass included, as at the Alpenhaus, check the last issue date: 21 November for the six-day pass, 23 November for the four-day one. If your dates fall later in the package window, ask the hotel what you get instead.

Practical points for the glacier weeks

Leave the gear on the mountain. The Alpincenter at 2,450 metres has lockers for skis, boots and valuables, and at the Maiskogel valley station the Kaprun Center depot has up to 2,000 heated and ventilated spaces. In autumn the Alpincenter one is the useful one, since that is where your ski day ends.

Watch the last ride up, not the last bus. With the uphill lift closing to skiers in mid-afternoon, a late bus from a far stop costs you real skiing. The 30-minute interval of Line K is the number to plan around.

Expect autumn to depend on the snow. The operator states that daily operating hours follow the weather, snow and operating conditions. Book the refundable rate for October and November, and check the lift status the evening before.

For the mountain itself, see glacier skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn; for the hotels that really sit on a slope once the whole region is open, the ski-in/ski-out round-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hotel in Kaprun is best for skiing the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in October and November?

Das Alpenhaus Kaprun, because it is the only property we found selling ski weeks explicitly dated to the autumn with a multi-day Kitzsteinhorn pass included: seven nights between 17 October and 27 November 2026 with a six-day pass, or four nights midweek with a four-day pass. For the shortest walk to a bus stop, Hotel Sonnblick has one directly opposite and Ski Dome Apartments one outside the building.

How do I get from Kaprun to the glacier without a car?

By ski bus. Line K runs from Burg Kaprun via the Maiskogelbahn valley station and Kaprun centre to the Kitzsteinhorn valley station every 30 minutes from 10 October 2026 to 2 May 2027, and inside Kaprun the ski buses are free for everyone. Line 660 runs from Zell am See to the Kitzsteinhorn and is free between Zell am See and Kaprun with a ski pass or the Guest Mobility Ticket.

Can I reach the glacier from the Maiskogel in autumn?

Not in the early weeks. The operator lists the 3K K-onnection, the lift that links the Maiskogel to the Kitzsteinhorn, as back in operation in December 2026. Until then the glacier is reached only by the Gletscherjet 1 from the Kitzsteinhorn valley station, so a hotel next to the Maiskogelbahn has no advantage in October and November.

Which ski pass do I need for the Kitzsteinhorn in autumn?

From 17 October to 26 November 2026 the operator sells Kitzsteinhorn-only autumn passes. From 27 November the Ski ALPIN CARD applies, covering the Kitzsteinhorn, Maiskogel, Schmittenhöhe and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, with a winter-start period to 18 December, main season from 19 December to 12 March 2027 and bonus season to 4 April 2027.

Can I ski down to the valley from the glacier in autumn?

Not at the start of the season. On 20 October 2026 the operator stated that skiing ends at the Alpincenter at 2,450 metres, so you ride back down by lift. The last ride up was listed at 15:30. The Alpincenter has lockers for skis and boots, which saves carrying gear back to the hotel every day.

Which property suits a large group for a glacier ski week?

Ski Dome Apartments: its largest unit is 186 square metres for up to twelve people, with six bedrooms and six bathrooms, and the building has a rental shop and ski school as well as a ski bus stop outside. It is self-catering, and rental and lessons are booked separately.
