Zell am See-Kaprun is one of the most relaxed family regions in the Alps: a warm bathing lake, gentle family mountains, a glacier to marvel at, and short distances between it all. This itinerary gives you a tried-and-tested 4-day plan for Zell am See-Kaprun with kids – with a summer plan for each day and a short winter alternative. Everything is chosen to work even with younger children, a stroller and short attention spans.
At a glance
- Best season: June to September for lake fun, December to March for snow – the glacier on the Kitzsteinhorn works all year.
- Base: Zell am See (lake & old town) or Kaprun (close to Maiskogel, Kitzsteinhorn and TAUERN SPA).
- Getting around: Much is walkable and stroller-friendly; buses connect Zell am See and Kaprun.
- Family tip: The regional guest card often includes mountain lifts and the boat – be sure to check the current benefits with your host.
Day 1 – Lake fun on the Zeller See
Summer: Start gently by the water. The Strandbad (lido) in Thumersbach has shallow lawns and easy access that are perfect for children. If you like, try family stand-up paddling (SUP) on the calm Zeller See – with a life jacket it is great fun even for primary-school kids. In the afternoon, a relaxed cruise on the MS Schmittenhohe gives parents a break and the little ones a new view. In between, lakeside playgrounds invite everyone to let off steam.
Winter alternative: In winter the lake becomes a scene for ice skating and sledging by the shore, followed by a hot chocolate in the Zell am See old town – a perfect, calm arrival day.
Day 2 – The Maiskogel family mountain
Summer: Today you head up the Maiskogel, Kaprun’s family mountain. The MK Maiskogelbahn glides you comfortably to the top – no problem with a stroller. Up top you will find easy family trails with gentle gradients and an adventure playground in the family-friendly summit area. Allow plenty of time to play; here the journey is often the destination.
Winter alternative: In winter the Maiskogel is ideal for first turns: gentle ski-school slopes for beginners and a family-friendly sledging run mean snow fun without stress.
Day 3 – Glacier adventure on the Kitzsteinhorn
Summer: The big wow day. The 3K K-onnection carries you from the Maiskogel across and up to the Kitzsteinhorn (TOP OF SALZBURG). Up here children marvel at snow in the middle of summer, while the Nationalpark Gallery and Cinema 3000 explain the mountain world of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern in a child-friendly way. Don’t forget warm clothes – it is cool up here even in July.
Winter alternative: In winter this becomes a family ski day or carefree snow fun on the snow-sure glacier. You will find tips on slopes and ski school in our skiing guide for Kaprun & Kitzsteinhorn.
Day 4 – Nature and relaxation
Summer: Finish with a kid-friendly walk through the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge: walkways and bridges lead along the rushing water – thrilling, yet manageable for families. Afterwards, head to the family world at TAUERN SPA Kaprun, where slides and warm water round off the day.
Winter alternative: In winter TAUERN SPA Kaprun takes centre stage, combined with a short winter walk through the snowy landscape – warm, cosy and child-friendly.
Family tips
- Many paths around the lake, Maiskogel and the gorge are stroller-friendly – when in doubt, ask locally for the best route.
- The regional guest card often includes mountain lifts and the boat; clarify the current benefits with your host.
- Always pack warm clothes and sun protection for the glacier – even in high summer.
- Build in buffer time: with kids, the experience matters more than a packed schedule.
