The history of the Grand Hotel dates back to 1878, when the first establishment opened at this unique lakeside location. After a new building in 1896 under the Boehm family, the hotel quickly became a meeting place for Viennese summer guests. In the 20th century the house saw turbulent times, from use as soldiers quarters in World War II to serving as headquarters of the American Rainbow University during the post-war occupation from 1945 to 1955. The distinctive original facade was preserved during the major renovation in 1984 and continues to define the townscape of Zell am See today.
