High above the valley stands Kaprun Castle – a medieval landmark that has shaped the landscape since the 12th century. Over the centuries the walls fell increasingly into disrepair. It was only the dedication of the Burgverein Kaprun (Kaprun Castle Association) that saved this architectural monument: through elaborate restoration, the castle was brought back to life and transformed into a place with a truly unmistakable atmosphere.

Guided tours through the old walls

On guided tours, visitors immerse themselves for around two hours in the castle’s eventful past. Tours take place several times a week – usually on Thursday and Sunday mornings, with occasional Monday early-evening tours as well. Knowledgeable guides tell tales of knights, nobility, and everyday life in centuries past.

The highlight of the year is the summer medieval festival. Costumed performers, medieval music, culinary delights and knightly displays turn the castle into the stage of a bygone era – an experience for young and old alike.
