Zell am See-Kaprun is one of Austria’s most popular mountain biking destinations. With over 300 kilometres of marked trails, flowing singletracks and challenging mountain routes, both beginners and experienced riders find their perfect terrain here.
Trails for Every Level
From leisurely forest paths to technical downhill trails, the region has the right route for every ability. Particularly popular are the Schmittenhöhe Tour (12 km, 1,202 m elevation gain) and the Hundstein route (14.3 km, 1,340 m) – both offering breathtaking panoramic views over Lake Zell and the surrounding peaks.
Highlights at Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel
At the Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel, purpose-built freeride trails await for adrenaline-filled descents. Gondolas transport bikes and riders effortlessly to altitude, so you can enjoy maximum downhill metres without long climbs.
Tour Tips for the Region
The Erlhofplatte Tour (21.2 km, 744 m elevation) is highly recommended – a varied loop through forests and alpine meadows. The Schneckenberg Tour (9.5 km, 160 m) is more relaxed and ideal for families and leisure riders. Those seeking variety can combine several stages for a multi-day biking week.
Bike Rental and Infrastructure
Numerous sports shops in Zell am See and Kaprun offer state-of-the-art bike equipment for hire – from cross-country hardtails to fully suspended enduro bikes. Bike parks, tool stations and well-equipped mountain huts for refreshment stops complete the offering.
Regulations and Best Season
Off-road mountain biking is seasonally regulated: from 1 May to 31 August trails are open daily from 8 am to 7 pm, from September to November from 8:30 am to 4 pm. The optimal biking season begins in late spring and extends into golden autumn. More excursion ideas for the warm season can be found in our guide Zell am See in Summer.
