Hohe Tauern Bike Trail

The Hohe Tauern Bike Trail is one of the most spectacular cycling adventures in the Alps – an epic multi-day tour through the Hohe Tauern National Park that combines sporting challenge with breathtaking natural scenery. Covering around 530 kilometres and 12,000 metres of elevation gain across 14 stages, the route traverses one of the wildest and most pristine mountain landscapes in Central Europe. Zell am See-Kaprun sits right at the heart of this extraordinary tour, making it an ideal base or stopover point.

14 Stages through the Hohe Tauern National Park

The trail starts in Hüttschlag in the Großarltal valley and winds its way along alpine paths, forest tracks and quiet country roads all the way to Krimml. Each of the 14 stages has its own distinct character – from gentle valley floors to high-alpine passages above 2,000 metres. Cyclists can tackle the whole route in one go or spread it over several days, stopping at mountain huts along the way.

Highlights: Grossglockner, Grossvenediger and the Krimml Waterfalls

The route passes some of Austria’s most iconic natural landmarks. The Grossglockner (3,798 m) and Grossvenediger (3,666 m) provide a majestic backdrop throughout the journey. A definite highlight are the Krimml Waterfalls – at 380 metres the highest waterfalls in Austria and fifth tallest in the world. Crystal-clear mountain lakes and rushing streams accompany you at every turn.

Suitable for Mountain Bikers and E-Bikers

The Hohe Tauern Bike Trail is designed for both ambitious mountain bikers and e-bike riders. The wide trails on forest roads and secured alpine paths mean that less experienced cyclists can also enjoy the route – as long as they have a solid base fitness and a taste for multi-day adventures. The combination of athletic challenge and immersive nature experience makes this trail truly unforgettable.

Stay in Traditional Mountain Huts

Traditional mountain huts and alpine lodges dot the route, offering tired cyclists a warm welcome. Cosy hut atmosphere, hearty alpine cuisine and the genuine hospitality of local hosts make every evening a special occasion. Those planning the tour in stages will find well-placed accommodation along the entire trail, from simple dormitories to comfortable guesthouses.
