Key facts at a glance

Scenically October is one of the finest months: larches and broadleaf woods turn colour, the air is clear, and the first half of the month often brings settled high pressure. At the same time the season begins to end. Alpine huts, individual lifts and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road close during the month, while glacier skiing starts up on the Kitzsteinhorn. The first half of October is clearly the better one.

October is the month when Zell am See-Kaprun is at its most photogenic and, at the same time, changes character fastest. In early October the larches stand golden, the air is clear, the trails are empty and many businesses still run. By late October the village is markedly quieter, the alpine huts are closed, and the region is preparing for winter. Timing within the month decides everything.

Weather and light

On a long-term average, valley highs reach around 13 degrees, with nights heading towards freezing. October can bring very fine settled spells, but also the first wintry incursions with snow down to middle altitudes. Both are normal.

What is special is the light. The clear, dry autumn air delivers the best long-distance visibility of the year, and the low sun models the mountains far more sculpturally than in high summer. If you photograph, destinations are in the best photo spots.

Autumn colour: where it is worth going

The larches at altitude and the broadleaf woods by the lake usually turn from early to mid October. Particularly rewarding:

  • Lakeshore paths on Lake Zell with reflections on still days, see Lake Zell.
  • Schmittenhöhe with panoramic views over the coloured valley, see the Schmittenhöhe.
  • Kaprun valley towards the reservoirs, see the high mountain reservoirs.
  • Grossglockner High Alpine Road as a panoramic drive in autumn light, see the high alpine road.

Reading the end of season correctly

During October the alpine huts close one after another, individual lifts end summer operation, and the high mountain reservoirs finish their season. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road closes in late autumn. At the same time glacier skiing starts up on the Kitzsteinhorn.

Because all these dates shift each year, October in particular calls for checking opening times directly with the business before you travel. The seasonal pattern is set out in public holidays and opening times.

What works well in October

Walking at middle altitudes is excellent in October as long as there is no snow. Temperatures are comfortable for walking and the paths are empty. Routes in hiking and easy walks. Note the shorter days: plan the return leg with a buffer, as darkness falls much earlier than in September.

In rain or an early onset of winter the region offers dependable alternatives: the TAUERN SPA Kaprun, the museums, the indoor pool and further ideas in indoor activities.

Prices and quiet

October is among the cheapest months of the year. Accommodation is readily available and the villages are quiet. If you like autumn and can live with a reduced offering in the second half of the month, you are getting a good deal, see also visiting on a budget.

Who October suits

October fits photographers, walkers, couples and anyone seeking quiet and autumn light. It does not fit families wanting a full activity programme, nor travellers who want to see the region in its full breadth for the first time. For a first visit, summer or deep winter are the better windows. To understand the shoulder season in detail, the sequel is Zell am See in November.
