Zell am See is more than just a name. This charming lakeside town on the shores of the crystal-clear Zeller See brings together Alpine glaciers, impressive mountains and a vibrant historic old town. Nestled between the Schmittenhöhe summit and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the town sits on a peninsula shaped by the Schmittenbach stream. Nature, history and culinary pleasures await at every turn.

From Market Town to City

Zell am See has held city status since 1810 and today has around 10,000 residents. The construction of the railway in 1875 gave tourism a decisive boost, and since then the town has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the SalzburgerLand.

The Zeller See

The Zeller See is the heart of the town. Its crystal-clear drinking-quality water invites swimming, stand-up paddling, sailing and diving in the summer months. Pleasant lakeside promenades lead around the shore, while excursion boats offer relaxed sightseeing cruises.

The Schmittenhöhe

A modern cable car whisks visitors from the town centre up to the Schmittenhöhe in just minutes. At the summit, a breathtaking panorama unfolds with the town, the lake and over 30 three-thousand-metre peaks. In summer, marked hiking trails and mountain bike routes beckon; in winter the mountain transforms into a first-class ski area.

Old Town, Cuisine and Shopping

The historic town centre with its lovingly restored buildings offers boutiques, souvenir shops and regional specialty stores. In the restaurants and cafes of the pedestrian zone, modern cuisine and traditional hospitality come together with regional products always centre stage.

Culture and History

The Museum Vogtturm in the heart of the old town presents the eventful history of the region alongside changing contemporary art exhibitions. Themed walking routes invite visitors to discover the town history at their own pace.
