In Elisabeth Park in Zell am See stand three impressive stone sculptures by Salzburg artist Johann Weyringer: Eagle, Ibex and Flower. This group, known as “the Trinity of the Alps”, was created in 1996 to mark the opening of the Schmitten Tunnel and is now one of the most celebrated artworks in the region.
A Masterpiece in Serpentinite
Johann Weyringer spent approximately two years creating the three figures from the rare serpentinite – an exceptionally hard and weather-resistant stone. He personally selected the stone blocks from a quarry in East Tyrol and crafted clay models at a 1:10 scale before carving the full-size works.
Eagle, Ibex and Flower: Three Symbols of the Alps
Each of the three figures represents a different aspect of Alpine nature: the Eagle symbolises majesty and freedom of the skies, the Ibex stands for the successful return of wildlife to the Alps, and the Flower represents the diversity of Alpine flora. Together they form a harmonious whole – the Trinity of the Alps.
History: From Tunnel Portal to City Park
Originally the sculptures were installed above the portal of the Schmitten Tunnel at Seespitz. In 2008 the decision was made to relocate the artwork to Elisabeth Park to make it accessible to a wider audience. Today the sculptures are an established part of the Zell am See townscape and a popular photo opportunity.
