Lake Zell (Zeller See) is one of the cleanest and warmest bathing lakes in the Alps – in high summer the water reaches around 23 °C. Because only electric boats are permitted and motorboats are banned, the water stays clear, calm and perfect for every kind of water sport. Framed by the Schmittenhöhe and the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, every outing on the water becomes a panoramic experience – whether stand-up paddling, sailing, windsurfing or simply swimming.
Stand-up paddling on Lake Zell
SUP is probably the most popular way to discover Lake Zell. The mirror-smooth surface in the early morning is ideal for beginners – windless, calm and with dreamy views of the surrounding mountains. Several rental stations along the shore let you hire boards by the hour or for the whole day. Guided tours and beginner courses take you safely onto the water and show you the loveliest corners of the lake. If you prefer something more active, paddle right across the lake or explore the quiet shoreline.
Sailing & windsurfing
Lake Zell is also a favourite among sailors and surfers. The thermal wind that builds on sunny afternoons creates pleasant conditions for sailing boats and windsurfers. The local sailing school offers courses for all levels – from your first manoeuvre to an independent tour. Equipment can be hired on site as well.
Boat rentals: electric, pedal and rowing boats
If you would rather take it easy, hire an electric, pedal or rowing boat. The boat rentals along the shore have everything for a relaxed day on the water. Electric boats glide silently across the lake – with no noise or exhaust fumes – and are perfect for families and leisurely outings. Pedal and rowing boats are a classic for children and anyone who wants to combine exercise with relaxation.

Rentals, season & tips
The water-sports season on Lake Zell usually runs from May to September, with the warmest water in July and August. Boards, boats and sailing gear are hired directly at the shore – booking ahead is worthwhile on fine summer days. Our tip: plan SUP and sailing tours for the morning, when the lake is still calm.
