At 3,029 metres, the Kitzsteinhorn towers above the Zell am See-Kaprun region and is Salzburg’s only glacier ski area. In the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, a high-alpine world of eternal ice, rugged rock and sweeping panoramas across the three-thousand-metre peaks awaits you. Whether in high summer or under deep snow in winter, the Kitzsteinhorn is an excursion destination that fascinates in every season.
Getting there & cable cars
From Kaprun, the modern 3K K-onnection cable car system carries you comfortably up the mountain. Across several sections you glide from the valley station up to Gipfelwelt 3000, enjoying magnificent views of glaciers and reservoir landscapes along the way. Kaprun is easy to reach by car or public transport.
Gipfelwelt 3000
Gipfelwelt 3000 is the heart of the excursion. From here, SalzburgerLand’s highest adventure world opens up, with viewing platforms, tunnels and pathways set amid the eternal ice.
- Top of Salzburg: the province’s highest panoramic platform at 3,029 metres
- National Park Gallery: a 360-metre tunnel right through the mountain with fascinating insights
- ICE CAMP: a world of snow and ice at around 2,600 metres
Glacier & snow
As Salzburg’s only glacier ski area, the Kitzsteinhorn offers guaranteed snow from October until late spring. Wide pistes, snow parks, a superpipe as well as freeride and ski-touring options make the glacier a meeting point for winter-sports fans of every ability. For the 2025/26 season, ski operations are planned from 11 October to 25 May.
Nature & national park
The Kitzsteinhorn lies in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest protected area in the Alps. On guided tours with the national park rangers you will learn fascinating facts about glaciers, geology and high-alpine wildlife. In summer, hiking trails of varying difficulty and three mountain-bike freeride trails (June to mid-September) beckon.
Where to eat
Several mountain restaurants and rustic alpine huts along the cable cars invite you to take a delicious break. Over Salzburg specialities and a warm drink, you can soak up the views of the glacier world to the full.
Tips for your visit
- Bring warm clothing – the summit is chilly even in summer.
