In short:<\/strong> this question is almost always asked the wrong way round. Ski amad\u00e9 and the Ski ALPIN CARD are not competing for the same guest, because not one single Ski amad\u00e9 area lies in Zell am See-Kaprun \u2013 and the Ski ALPIN CARD is valid in no Ski amad\u00e9 area. Which pass “is worth more” is therefore decided ninety per cent by your accommodation, not by the pass. If you are staying in Zell am See or Kaprun, Ski amad\u00e9 is not an offer for you, it is a day trip. The comparison only becomes real while the accommodation is still open \u2013 and then it is not about kilometres of piste, but about driving time and snow reliability.<\/p>\n

The two passes side by side<\/h2>\n

Both are multi-area passes, but they are built differently: the Ski ALPIN CARD combines three neighbouring areas, Ski amad\u00e9 five regions spread across two federal states.<\/p>\n

Why 760 against 408 is the wrong sum<\/h2>\n

On paper Ski amad\u00e9 has almost twice as many kilometres of piste. But that figure describes the total of a network, not what you can reach from your breakfast table. And both passes have the same problem: a large share of those kilometres lies too far away to use on a normal ski day.<\/p>\n

With the Ski ALPIN CARD this is easy to work out. Of the 408 kilometres, roughly 130 are local to Zell am See-Kaprun \u2013 the Schmittenh\u00f6he and the Kitzsteinhorn. By far the largest share falls to the Skicircus in the Glemmtal, some 30 to 40 minutes away by car and not<\/em> reachable on skis. Anyone arriving without a car is paying for kilometres they will never see.<\/p>\n

With Ski amad\u00e9 the effect is stronger, not weaker. The five regions do not adjoin one another: between Schladming-Dachstein in Styria and Gastein in the Salzburg Pinzgau lie a state border and the Tauern pass. No guest skis those 760 kilometres in a week. Realistically you use one region, perhaps two \u2013 and then what you have on any given day stands against a single Ski ALPIN CARD region, not against the combined total.<\/p>\n

The useful measure is therefore not the total kilometre count, but this: how many kilometres of piste can you reach in under 30 minutes in the morning?<\/strong> By that reckoning the big network passes sit far closer together than the brochures suggest.<\/p>\n
