Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau demolished a good part of the medieval town to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You only see that structure if somebody points it out. The sequence of squares from Domplatz through Residenzplatz to Kapitelplatz is deliberately composed; the passageways between Getreidegasse and Universit\u00e4tsplatz are an invention born of cramped space. Walk through alone and you miss both.<\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"zsk-gyg-btn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/en-gb\/salzburg-l4\/2-stundiger-rundgang-durch-salzburg-mozart-altstadt-mehr-t22705\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\">Check availability &amp; price<\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a walk covers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic two hours cover the whole old town core:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Getreidegasse<\/strong> with its wrought-iron guild signs \u2014 and <strong>Mozart&#8217;s birthplace<\/strong> at number 9, explained from outside, entered only with your own ticket.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The cathedral<\/strong>, the first large baroque building north of the Alps, and <strong>Residenzplatz<\/strong> with its fountain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Mirabell gardens<\/strong> with the view to the fortress \u2014 the most photographed axis in the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>St Peter&#8217;s Abbey and cemetery<\/strong> with the catacombs cut into the rock.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The horse pond<\/strong> and the festival district at the foot of the M\u00f6nchsberg.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is <strong>not<\/strong> included: interiors. A walk shows you the city from outside and puts it in order. Museums, Mozart&#8217;s residence and <a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/hohensalzburg-fortress-salzburg-card-tickets\/\">Hohensalzburg Fortress<\/a> you visit afterwards on your own \u2014 which is exactly what the afternoon is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best time for a walk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salzburg has two times of day when the old town is pleasant, and one when it is not. Between roughly 11am and 3pm the day-trip traffic pushes through Getreidegasse \u2014 coach groups and excursions from the lake district, all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A walk at 9 or 10am is therefore noticeably better than one at midday: you can hear the guide, you are not queuing outside Mozart&#8217;s birthplace, and the light in the narrow lanes is kinder in the morning anyway. That suits guests coming from Zell am See, since an early train is the most relaxed way to arrive regardless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One exception is the <strong>Salzburg Festival<\/strong> from late July to late August. The city is then busy throughout, but also in a state worth seeing once. If you come during it, book a walk in advance rather than turning up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Half a day from Zell am See<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the trip where the train is clearly the better choice. You go direct to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof in about an hour and a half and are at Mirabellplatz, where most walks start, in a good ten minutes on foot. No parking garage, no access restrictions, no hunting for a space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Morning:<\/strong> travel and the guided walk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Midday:<\/strong> lunch in the old town \u2014 the lanes are far less confusing after the walk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Afternoon:<\/strong> the fortress by funicular, or a museum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evening:<\/strong> home, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/mozart-concert-salzburg\/\">Mozart concert<\/a> with an overnight stay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to check when booking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Language.<\/strong> Many walks run in English or bilingually. If you want a specific language, confirm it explicitly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Group size.<\/strong> A large group in Getreidegasse in summer is simply impractical \u2014 you hear the guide less well and block the lane.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meeting point.<\/strong> Usually Mirabellplatz or Residenzplatz. Arrive ten minutes early; the squares are large and several groups start at once.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shoes.<\/strong> Two hours of cobblestones. The most commonly underestimated point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When a walk is not worth it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you already know Salzburg, a standard walk is repetition.
