The evening begins with the ascent: the <strong>Festungsbahn<\/strong> funicular from Festungsgasse is normally included in the concert ticket. The evening then starts considerably earlier and runs to about three and a half hours in total. The programme is the familiar material \u2014 Eine kleine Nachtmusik, arias from the operas, some Haydn or Schubert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is deliberate, and it should disappoint nobody who knows it in advance: these concerts are aimed at visitors, not at the subscription audience. If you want large forces and demanding programmes, the <strong>Salzburg Festival<\/strong> in summer or the Mozarteum&#8217;s own season is where to look \u2014 both need booking much further ahead and sit in a different price bracket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The critical point: getting back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where most plans fail, and not on the outward leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A concert starting at 8pm ends around 9:30pm. With dinner you are unlikely to leave before 10:30pm. <strong>The last train connections from Salzburg to Zell am See run earlier than most people assume<\/strong> \u2014 check them with the <a href=\"https:\/\/salzburg-verkehr.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salzburg transport association<\/a> or the \u00d6BB before you buy the ticket, not after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By car the Tauern motorway is clear at night and the 85 kilometres take about an hour. But that is an hour of mountain road after a long day, and if you had wine with dinner it is no option at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So in most cases the sensible answer is: <strong>plan a concert evening with a night in Salzburg<\/strong> and use the next morning for the old town or the fortress. That turns a rushed evening into a good short break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practicalities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dress:<\/strong> there is no dress code.
