Where you stay shapes the holiday more than the star rating does: whether you carry skis in the morning or get on a bus, whether you can walk to dinner, whether the lake is at the door or two kilometres away. This page sorts the places by that \u2014 and says in each case who they do not suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the place matters more than the hotel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The region is compact but not small. Between the eastern shore of Lake Zell and the valley station at the Kitzsteinhorn lie several districts and municipalities, and the journeys between them are different in winter from what they are in summer. The recurring booking mistake is therefore not choosing a poor property but choosing the wrong side: a ski holiday on the quiet shore, a swimming holiday at the lift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three things decide it in practice, and none of them appears on a hotel page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The distance to the cable car<\/strong> \u2014 the defining factor of the day in winter, almost irrelevant in summer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The distance to the lake<\/strong> \u2014 the defining factor in summer, almost irrelevant in winter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What you can reach on foot in the evening.<\/strong> That varies more between districts than it does between hotel categories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the municipality&#8217;s guest cards and tariffs \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/summer-card-zell-am-see-kaprun\/\">Summer Card<\/a> as much as the ski passes \u2014 apply equally in every district. In winter you&hellip;<\/p><span class=\"zsk-orte-meta\">3 km \u00b7 8 min. from Zell am See<\/span><\/article><article class=\"zsk-orte-card\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/thumersbach-austria\/\">Thumersbach on Lake Zell: the quiet shore opposite town<\/a><\/h4><p>Thumersbach is the eastern shore of Lake Zell and a district of Zell am See: quieter, usually cheaper, and about eleven minutes from the&hellip;<\/p><span class=\"zsk-orte-meta\">4 km \u00b7 11 min. from Zell am See<\/span><\/article><article class=\"zsk-orte-card\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/kesselfall-kaprun-valley\/\">Kesselfall Kaprun: the end of the road<\/a><\/h4><p>Kesselfall is not a village but the end of the mountain road about six kilometres past Kaprun: a car park, a ticket office and&hellip;<\/p><span class=\"zsk-orte-meta\">12 km \u00b7 20 min. from Zell am See<\/span><\/article><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The short version: who belongs where<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only want one line per place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/discover-zell-am-see\/\">Zell am See<\/a> (old town)<\/strong> \u2014 the only location where everything is walkable in the evening. Also the most expensive and, in summer, the busiest.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/schuttdorf-zell-am-see\/\">Sch\u00fcttdorf<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 the largest district, with the Areit cable car inside it. The right choice for skiing and for self-catering; no old-town scene.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/thumersbach-austria\/\">Thumersbach<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 the quiet eastern shore, facing the Schmittenh\u00f6he, with its own lido. For the lake and for families; in the evening you need the bus.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/schmittental-valley\/\">Schmittental<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 not a village but the location at the valley stations. In December the best address in the municipality, in July the most awkward.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/discover-kaprun\/\">Kaprun<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 a place of its own with its own centre, access to the Kitzsteinhorn and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/zellamseekaprun.at\/en\/tauern-spa-kaprun-thermal\/\">TAUERN SPA<\/a>. Quieter than Zell am See, further from the lake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three decisions to make first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Winter or summer \u2014 do not plan for both at once.<\/strong> The best winter location is not the best summer location, and the reverse. Book in February the way you would in July and you will be in the wrong place for one of the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. With or without a car.<\/strong> Without one, the old town and Sch\u00fcttdorf work best; Thumersbach works well, the Schmittental works with limits. Check the evening connections in every case \u2014 the last bus decides how long you can eat out. Timetables are with the <a href=\"https:\/\/salzburg-verkehr.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salzburg transport authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.
