The price for that is peak season with everything that entails. With two simple rules, start early and take storms seriously, July is still relaxed.

Weather and water temperature

On a long-term average, valley highs sit at about 23 degrees with nights around 10 degrees. This is Alpine summer weather: warm enough to swim, but rarely oppressive. Lake Zell often reaches around 22 degrees in July, making it one of the most agreeable bathing lakes in the Alps. A month-by-month breakdown is in water temperature of Lake Zell, and the bathing spots are listed under lidos and Lake Zell.

The thunderstorm rule

The most important planning issue in July is afternoon thunderstorms. On warm days, storm cells frequently build over the Hohe Tauern from early afternoon, often quickly and locally. On an exposed ridge that is dangerous.

The practical consequence: start mountain tours early, be at the highest point by midday and descending thereafter. Deliberately move the afternoon into the valley, to the lake, into the Sigmund Thun Gorge or the TAUERN SPA. If the weather turns completely, the list in the bad weather programme helps.

The full programme

Kitzsteinhorn and Gipfelwelt 3000: snow and high mountains in midsummer, see the glacier in summer and Gipfelwelt 3000.

Kaprun high mountain reservoirs: Mooserboden above 2,000 metres, see the reservoirs.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road: the region’s great panoramic drive, see the high alpine road.

Water sports: stand-up paddling, sailing and surfing, see water sports.

Boat service: the classic lake circuit, see the boat service.

Action sports: rafting, canyoning and more under action sports.

Handling the crowds intelligently

Crowding in July is very unevenly distributed in both time and space. Between 10am and 4pm the lakeshore, the lidos and the well-known attractions are full; before and after that it is quiet. Take the first lift and you often have the top almost to yourself for an hour.

Second, it pays to switch to lesser-known destinations. Instead of the main routes, consider the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail, the alpine pastures away from the main paths and the quieter photo spots. For general orientation, the overview of excursion destinations helps.

With children in July

July is the family month par excellence: warm water, lidos, the summer toboggan run and flat shoreline paths. Ideas are gathered in Zell am See with kids in summer, the Maisi Flitzer and the family itinerary.

Who July suits

July is the right choice for families, swimmers and anyone who wants the full summer programme and will accept peak season for it. If you want the same landscape more quietly and cheaply, June or September deliver it.
