Snowmelt fills every stream, the meadows on the valley floor are lush green, and white peaks still stand above them. At the same time it is quiet, because the summer season has not yet begun. That is a very good deal, provided you know what you are signing up for.

Weather in May

On average, valley highs reach around 18 degrees, cooling to roughly 5 degrees at night. May is therefore pleasantly mild, but also one of the wetter months. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are typical, particularly in the second half. Starting in the morning statistically gives you the better odds.

Water as the main attraction

May is the month of maximum water flow, which makes several destinations far more impressive than in high summer:

Sigmund Thun Gorge: the Kaprun stream forces its way through the ravine at full power in spring. Details and walking times in the gorge guide and getting there and parking.

Streams and waterfalls in the national park: the Hohe Tauern shows its most dynamic side in May, see Hohe Tauern National Park.

Lake Zell: the shore is green and empty, ideal for walks and photographs, background in Lake Zell.

Hiking: yes below, not yet above

The rule of thumb in May is that everything up to around 1,500 metres is comfortably walkable, and above that it becomes progressively tricky. High-level paths still carry snowfields, individual sections can be closed, and old snow is more slippery in spring than it looks. Stay deliberately at middle altitudes in May. Suitable routes are collected in the hiking guide, easier variants in easy walks on the Schmittenhöhe, and for guided options see guided walks.

What starts in May

May is a ramp-up month. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road opens after snow clearing and is one of the region’s great driving experiences. The Kaprun high mountain reservoirs and the Lake Zell boat service only begin, depending on the year, towards the end of May or in June. Exact dates shift with the snow, so please check them currently.

Cycling comes into its own in May. Valley routes are clear, temperatures are agreeable and there is little traffic. Starting points in cycling, e-bike and road cycling.

Who May suits

May is ideal for walkers at middle altitudes, cyclists, photographers and anyone seeking quiet and fair prices. Couples in particular will find an unusually relaxed region, with ideas in a romantic weekend. It is less suited to swimming holidays, high-alpine summit tours and families set on the full summer programme with every lift running. For that, summer from June onwards is the right time.

In May the region is at its greenest and its wettest in the best sense: snowmelt, full waterfalls, lush valleys.
