April is the hardest month to sum up in one sentence in Zell am See-Kaprun. While the first meadows turn green in the valley and you can sit by the lakeshore in a t-shirt, skiing continues on the Kitzsteinhorn. In between, many businesses take a break. If you can handle that simultaneity, you get a very quiet and inexpensive holiday.<\/p>\n
On a long-term average, valley highs reach around 13 degrees with nights just above freezing. But those averages tell you less in April than in any other month. There can be a week of 20 degrees and sunshine followed immediately by a wintry spell with fresh snow down to the valley. Pack accordingly: a rain jacket, a warm layer, but also sunglasses and lighter clothing.<\/p>\n
At altitude it stays wintry. On the Kitzsteinhorn<\/a> alpine conditions with frost and wind persist, and the snowpack on the glacier is deep.<\/p>\n The decisive dividing line is Easter. Up to and including Easter, much of the region still runs a winter operation with the corresponding offering and prices. After that the shoulder season begins and the picture changes quickly.<\/p>\n Because these dates shift every year, April in particular calls for checking current opening times directly with each business before you book. The seasonal pattern is also set out in public holidays and opening times.<\/p>\n April offers something no other month does: you can ski on the glacier in the morning and walk along a green lakeshore in the afternoon. That combination is the month\u2019s real appeal.<\/p>\n Add to that the first valley walks. The lower paths around Lake Zell and in the Kaprun valley are usually snow-free from April while higher routes remain closed. A selection of easy routes is in easy walks and the regional hiking guide<\/a>. The Sigmund Thun Gorge<\/a> also reopens in spring, though the exact date depends on the thaw.<\/p>\n Leaving aside Easter week, April is one of the cheapest times of year to travel. Accommodation is readily available, the villages are quiet, and you share the paths with far fewer people. For budget-conscious travellers, more in visiting on a budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n April fits glacier skiers, travellers who value quiet and low prices over a full programme, and people who find the contrast between winter above and spring below appealing. It does not fit families wanting a full activity programme, first-time visitors who want to see the region at its broadest, or lake holidays.
