The snowpack is mature and stable, the days are already much longer than in January, and the sun sits high enough that afternoons on a terrace are enjoyable again. Which is precisely why half of Europe takes its half-term holiday at the same time.

Weather: cold, but brighter

On a long-term average, valley highs sit slightly above freezing with nights of minus 6 to minus 8 degrees. The decisive difference from January is not temperature but light: by late February the evenings are noticeably longer, which extends the ski day and makes afternoon plans outdoors attractive again.

Higher up it stays fully wintry. On the Kitzsteinhorn February still means high-alpine conditions with wind and double-digit sub-zero temperatures. On the Schmittenhöhe, by contrast, you benefit from the southerly aspect of many slopes and the view over the lake.

The holiday question

February is the month when half-term breaks from Austria, Bavaria, other German states and the Netherlands overlap. In practice that means continuous peak season with the prices and full houses to match. If you are not tied to school holidays, mid-January or March will be considerably cheaper.

If you do travel in February, you can still manage the crowds. Arriving midweek rather than on a Saturday, starting early on the lifts, and deliberately choosing the less frequented sectors all help more than any supposed insider tip. For choosing between the mountains, see Kitzsteinhorn or Schmittenhöhe.

The ski area and passes

All three mountains run at full capacity. For longer stays the Ski ALPIN CARD is worth a look, since it additionally covers Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and therefore creates genuine escape options on busy days. How the pricing works is set out in ski pass prices, the character of the slopes in the ski guide and, for Kaprun specifically, the Kitzsteinhorn piste guide.

With children in February

February is the classic family month. The Maiskogel in Kaprun is the friendliest beginner mountain in the region, and the ski school and childcare offering runs at full tilt. For concrete ideas see winter activities for children and Zell am See with kids in winter. For bad-weather days, the rainy-day ideas with children help.

Away from the slopes

Tobogganing and winter walking with practically guaranteed snow, see winter without skiing.

Cross-country skiing on well-groomed trails, see cross-country skiing.

TAUERN SPA Kaprun as the counterweight to a day on the slopes, see TAUERN SPA.

Gipfelwelt 3000 for the high-alpine view without skis, see Gipfelwelt 3000.

Who February suits

February is the right choice when conditions have to be right and budget is secondary: families with school-age children, committed skiers, anyone who wants snow reliability and daylight at the same time. If you are flexible and optimising for quiet or for price, mid-January or March makes the better arithmetic. In short: best snow, highest price.

February is peak season in Zell am See-Kaprun: the best snow quality and more daylight than January, but also half-term holidays from half of Europe.
